Sister Jessica's Journal - Part 1
September 15, 2004 Hi from the Philippines:
On September 8, the Birth of Mary, I took to the air to start my 11-month immersion in the Philippines. It was an exciting day and the flights went beautifully.
I arrived in Manila at 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, where I met Sr. Deling. We were lucky to be offered a ride to my new home by Fr. Cito, a friend of Sr. Deling's brother. Sisters Julie and Lucy were waiting for our arrival and welcomed us at the gate to the house. The next few days were filled with unpacking and trying to get over the jet lag. In these two days I was introduced to the different ways of the house, like how to take a shower and why food is not left out. I really learned why I needed a sweat towel. I never knew I could sweat so much. Even the Sisters here in the house thought it was hot, which made me feel better. I wasn't alone in this humid heat and the fans have become my best friend. During this time, I have had many firsts, from the food to learning how to ride a Jeepney. I have to say the food is great but the air, now that's another story. The smog here is like nothing I have ever seen. It is a hazard to your health. I have to say I am lucky I am not sensitive to motor vehicle exhaust. It is the number one polluter in the city, I think. The sky is always brown here, not like Washington where it is blue. The mornings are the best time of day. You feel the fresh and cool air and the sky lights up the land. On Sunday, the 12th we had a Sector gathering at our house. All the sisters came to Paco for the day. It was good to see all the sisters again and be introduced into the Sector. The day was a time of sharing and enjoyment for all sisters. My jet lag still was going strong; so halfway through the meeting my brain took a small trip to heaven (sleep). On Monday, the 13th, I met with Sr. Linda Jo Reynolds to talk about my time here in the Philippines, and to go over all the information I need to know to become an active sister in this Sector. The rest of the week is time for me to relax a little and get used to all the changes I am experiencing here. I will close this letter by asking you all for your prayers during this time that I will experience all God wants to show me. I do hope to keep everyone updated at least once a month and hopefully a little more often at the beginning. Take care and know of my love, Jessica Read: Sister Jessica's Journal: Pt. II
