Women and Children

On any given night in Seattle and surrounding areas, it is estimated that more than 600 women are without shelter. Some of these homeless mothers have their children beside them.

Sisters of Providence, Mother Joseph Province, hear the cry of the poor, many of whom are women and children. The sisters have formed a nonprofit corporation that sponsors a community project to help meet their needs.

Providence Pariseau Ministries

Providence Pariseau Ministries is named for Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart, whose birth name was Esther Pariseau. It includes:

Sojourner Place (Seattle) helps single or pregnant women get back on their feet as they dare to make changes in their lives to overcome obstacles like homelessness, substance abuse, jail time, domestic violence and financial crisis.

Women can stay for up to a year as they use life skills classes, on-site counseling and other resources to battle the demons that have made them homeless. About 90 percent of these women successfully transition into independent living, and perhaps a job or school.

Providence Hospitality House, a ministry to provide emergency shelter for women and children in Seattle, closed indefinitely in September 2011.

Building Bridges

Building Bridges, in Portland, Oregon, is the third community project sponsored by Providence Pariseau Corp. It is a network of pediatric long-term care facilities providing care for children who are medically fragile and require 24-hour skilled nursing.

Regular educational conferences offer a vehicle for sharing best practices as well as for developing support and advocacy for the children and their families.

Other programs for women and children

Sisters of Providence also sponsor an intercommunity ministry for women and children in Spokane called Transitions.  Its projects include EduCare, Miryam’s House, New Leaf Bakery, Transitional Living Center (TLC) and Women’s Hearth.  More information may be found at the Transitions website.
